PJ Harvey , in full Polly Jean Harvey , born October 9, , Corscombe, near Yeovil, England , British singer-songwriter and guitarist whose mythically pitched, fanatically intense recordings and concerts set new standards for women in rock. Harvey, born to countercultural parents in rural England , seems to have grown up with a sense of rock as simply another elemental force within the landscape.

The song , like many others by Harvey, treats female sexuality as a ravaging, haunted force, but, instead of acting the victim, she theatrically embodies her obsessions , equates them with the alluring menace of rock and the blues , and builds herself into an archetype. In other hands—for example, those of the postpunk rocker Nick Cave , one of her major influences—such moves would run the risk of absurdity.

It helped that The Boatman’s Call also featured songs about another relationship, a more recent four-month affair with PJ Harvey (whom he met.

I remember the first time I heard PJ Harvey. I was working at my college radio station, KDVS. Someone had sent a single over in hopes that we would add this new artist into rotation on our playlist. Promotional items were delivered by the literal bucketful on a daily basis. Different record labels, local bands, and random DIY upstarts were all vying for a treasured spot on the hallowed weekly charts. Music by British artists was considered especially exotic, as it was filled with words, phrases, and references completely foreign to my Californian ears.

We may have been speaking the same language, but everything else about bands from the UK seemed cooler- more raw, more real- than much of the stuff the station was sent from the States. Or at least it seemed that way to me at the time. I put the song on my CD Walkman and plugged in the headphones.

Her first three albums, which I first heard as a teen, are an exhaustive chart of what it can mean to be both sexual and a girl. When I was 13, I learned how to move my hips. This is a delicate moment for a girl, the moment she realizes she has hips; the whole aching machine of puberty, the perpetual stretch marks and aches and rapidly changing ratio of limbs to torso seems to crystallize. You look at the mirror, you think, I don’t look like a kid. It’s not about the blood thing, although there is a grim certainty that the hips mean blood is coming.

But Stories… also reveals a softer side of the British songstress, along with some of her most elegant songs.

I thought, No, I want absolute beauty. I want this album to sing and fly and be full of reverb and lush layers of melody. I want it to be my beautiful, sumptuous, lovely piece of work. As its full title indicates, this is an album that takes you to disparate places — from the crowded city to the barren oceanside. For inspiration, Harvey spent six months in New York City, which is apparent on several tracks.

It was a surprise: But album number five found her in New York and in love. The result was lusher than anything she had recorded but also vibrant and surprisingly catchy. In Stories… one can find both the consolation and the courage to tell the world about your feelings. Early efforts generally show a more aggressive sound than on her later works, both musically and lyrically.
